ROUND ROCK – For the first time since the 2022 season, the Boerne High football team won their season opener after the Greyhounds defeated Westwood Friday night at the Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex, 34-14.
The Hounds start the year at 1-0 and are home Friday to host Laredo United, 7 p.m.
Prior to Friday, Boerne’s last opening-day win came during the 2022 season. They lost at Flour Bluff in 2023 and then dropped their opening games to Pieper during the 2024 and 2025 seasons.
Boerne’s 2022 season is when they advanced to the 4A-D1 state championship game and the Greyhounds are looking for similar results in 2026.
Westwood put up a good fight against Boerne and tied it at 7-7 early, but the Greyhounds tallied the next 27 points thanks to four touchdowns to pull ahead 34-7 late in the third quarter.
BHS quarterback Grant Sweeney found Jacob Hicks on a 22-yard touchdown pass on their opening drive to cap a nine-play, 71-yard possession, and it was 7-0 less than three minutes into the contest.
Westwood answered on their opening drive as well and finished it with a 39-yard TD pass to Weston Franz and it was 7-7.
But the Greyhounds went up for good in the second quarter after a Warriors punt. Kole Traylor fielded the punt and returned it for a 94-yard touchdown, and it was 14-7 early in the second quarter.
Ronald Smith set up the next BHS TD after Smith intercepted a pass to kill a Warriors drive. The Greyhounds marched it close to the goal line and then Sweeney ran a quarterback sneak and the lead was 20-7 with 6:34 left until the break.
In the third quarter, Boerne tacked on two more touchdowns to start pulling away. Hicks caught his second receiving touchdown from Sweeney, this one for 34 yards, and Boerne bumped the lead to 27-7.
Later in the third, Greyhound running back Callan Combs punched it in on a short run and Boerne was up, 34-7, after the Diego Jimenez kick. The Hounds were seemingly in control, but the Warriors had a chance to make it interesting.
Kameron Hill scored for Westwood early in the fourth quarter, and it was 34-14, and after a Boerne punt, Westwood drove down to the BHS 4-yard line. A touchdown there would have made it a 13-point game, but the Round Rock drive stalled after the Boerne defense bent but didn’t break.
Westwood went for it on fourth and goal at the BHS 4-yard line and were turned away by the Greyhounds defense to keep the lead at 20 points.
From that point on, Boerne went into ball-control mode and worked on chewing up the clock. A roughing the punter penalty inside of two minutes helped the Greyhounds burn up more time and basically bring it to an end.
