In a back-and-forth game mired by lightening delays, Comfort High had the final momentum swing as they defeated Brady, 32-29, Friday night at Bobcat Stadium.
Comfort starts the year at 1-0 and visits Crystal City next.
Friday’s game was pushed back 45 minutes and started at 7:45 p.m. They played three minutes and then were hit by two 30-minute delays and didn’t restart until after 9 p.m., and didn’t wrap up until past 11 p.m.
Brady scored in the first three minutes and was up 6-0 before the game went into the first delay.
Once it resumed, Comfort answered with a Gabe Gonzales TD run and the Bobcats pulled ahead, 7-6.
Brady pulled ahead with a field goal for the 9-7 lead, but Comfort scored on a 20-yard run by Omar Rivera and pulled ahead 14-9. Rivera booted a field goal right before the half to give the Bobcats a 17-9 lead at the break.
It was only a five-minute halftime and then played resumed.
Brady cut into the lead with the first TD of the second half on a short pass and it was 17-15 after the Bulldogs went for 2 points but didn’t convert.
Jared Valadez gave Comfort some breathing room with a 49-yard scamper into the end zone and the Cats were back on top 24-15, but the Bulldogs wouldn’t go away. Brady scored on a 55-yard run and this time the 2-point try was good and it was a one-point game at 24-23 at the end of the third quarter.
Brady pulled ahead in the fourth quarter on a 12-yard Blane James run. The 2-point try didn't work, but the Bulldogs were leading, 29-24.
Rivera put the game away for the Bobcats after he scored on a 21-yard scamper midway through the fourth quarter. Comfort went for 2 points and converted for a 3-point lead at 32-29 with 6:05 left.
Comfort’s defense took over from there and didn’t allow another point as the Bobcats held on for the victory in the game that contained six lead changes.
