Nov. 3 is eight weeks away. The last day to register to vote is Oct. 5. Early voting starts Oct. 19. Those are the only dates that matter now.
Kendall County already chose its Republican nominees. Most of them will be the only names on the local side of the November ballot. That is not a reason to relax. It is a reason to finish the job.
A lot of people assume this county takes care of itself. That assumption is how good years get wasted. The other side is registering voters and knocking on doors. If we treat “safe” as a substitute for turnout, we hand them the margin.
Check your registration this week. If you moved, if you turned 18, if you have never voted here, Oct. 5 is the cutoff. After that, you are watching from the sidelines.
Then decide what you can actually do. One Saturday at a table. One ride to the polls. One conversation with someone who has not decided whether this election is worth their time.
That is the work. It is not glamorous; I certainly understand that. However, it is how counties stay the way they are.
The county has also begun the process to put the Elections Office into a larger building at the old Burdick Center, and I appreciate them getting it finalized, but better space does not vote. People do.
Statewide, Texas will choose a governor, a U.S. senator, and a congressional direction that lasts well past this fall. You do not have to love every nominee to understand that staying home is still a choice with consequences.
I will not list the same values we printed in June. You know them. The question is whether we act like we believe them when the calendar gets short.
