Here’s a fabulous publishing story for you. Richard W. Butler Jr. is a volunteer who helps in our library’s archives with digitizing and other important tasks. He’s a huge baseball fan and was chatting with Paul Barwick at the Jail Museum about the history of the sport in our area. Utilizing many of the resources at the library, Butler put together a manuscript and presented the idea to a representative from Texas Tech University Press at a past Boerne Book Festival.
Fast forward to today, and “Hill Country Ball: Depression- Era Baseball in the Texas German Belt” is available to read; you can order the book wherever fine books are sold. We’ll have it on the shelves here at the library soon, and you will have the chance to hear the author talk about his book at our “Hill Country Baseball: Past and Present” panel discussion at the Boerne Book Festival, on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 3 p.m. in the community room.
In this fascinating book, Butler explores the history of baseball in Boerne and the surrounding area, during the 1930s. You’ll recognize many of the area’s family names in the book; Uecker, Theis and Fabra, to name a few. And celebrity names such as Dizzy Dean. Included are some great undiscovered stories about baseball in the Hill Country.
Area authors Tim Christ, Rick Brooks and Stan Leech will round out this panel discussion, and Paul Barwick will moderate the talk. You’ll be able to purchase “Hill Country Ball,” as well as books by Christ, Brooks, and Leech, after the discussion.
