SAN ANTONIO — During Hunger Action Month this month, the San Antonio Food Bank is calling on our Southwest Texas community to Nourish in Numbers.
As the cost of essentials like groceries and energy continue to put pressure on household budgets, everyone can take action to help ensure their neighbors have access to the food they need to thrive “Together we can fight hunger, and together we can feed hope,” said Eric Cooper, president and CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank. “It takes people looking out for each other, especially now, as so many families navigate the difficult tradeoffs brought on by high food prices.
“This Hunger Action Month, we're asking everyone to show up for their neighbors facing hunger. Whether you give food, time, money or voice, your action matters,” Cooper said. “By Nourishing in Numbers, we strengthen our communities.”
According to the latest data available from Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap study, Texas experienced the highest level of food insecurity in the nation in 2024. In the San Antonio Food Bank’s 29-county service area, 1 in 5 people total and 1 in 4 children are food insecure.
Leann, a mother of six, and her husband work hard to provide for their family, but rising food costs, fuel expenses and other household bills have made it increasingly difficult to put healthy meals on the table.
“Coming here has been such a blessing,” Leann said about her trips to the Frio County Food Bank, a branch of the San Antonio Food Bank. “We look at what we’re able to receive here, and then we simply fill in the gaps with our grocery budget. It’s ok to need help. There are seasons when we’re able to help others, and there are seasons when we need help ourselves.”
People can get involved in helping others by donating or signing up for a volunteer shift at safoodbank. org, or with any of the actions on our “30 Ways in 30 Days” calendar. You can also download our Hunger Action Month toolkit online at safoodbank.org/ hunger-action-month.
