Of all the football games scheduled for this weekend in the greater San Antonio area, one of those that will draw a lot of media attention will be Boerne High playing at Alamo Heights.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Orem Stadium.
BHS coach Brett Sawyer said that whenever the Greyhounds and Mules square off, it draws the media spotlight just because of the special rivalry between the schools.
“I think a lot of media will be there,” Sawyer said about Friday’s contest in San Antonio. “I’ve been getting a lot of emails from media outlets asking me for updated stats.”
It’s the district opener for the Greyhounds and the Mules, and both enter the contest undefeated at 4-0, so that adds a little more spice to the rivalry since one of the teams will suffer their first loss on Friday.
Sawyer said the players know what the environment will be like and hasn’t had to say too much to them about it.
“It’s one of those that you don’t need to say anything to get them motivated,” he said. “It’s their homecoming but you don’t want to make too big of a deal of it, you can’t worry about all that stuff.
“It’s a fun rivalry and should be a good game,” Sawyer added. “The emotions will be there. It’s going to be a great environment.”
The Greyhounds have played Alamo Heights four times since Sawyer has been in Boerne, twice as an assistant and twice as the head coach and the teams are 2-2 against each other during that span, but Sawyer is 2-0 against the Mules as Boerne’s head coach.
Alamo Heights won in 2021 (34-30) and in 2024 (35-28), but BHS has won the last two, both last year, once during the regular season (37-35) and the other time in the playoffs (56-49).
Sawyer said one thing is certain when the Hounds square off against the Mules.
“Something weird always happens,” he said.
Sawyer is right about that, from a couple of special teams’ touchdowns by the Mules in 2021 to give them a 34-30 win, to last year’s game during the regular season that saw the Greyhounds hit a Hail Mary for a touchdown and also run a trick play for another score.
Boerne’s 37-35 win at BISD Stadium last year on Sept. 26 snapped the Mules’ 34-game district winning streak and handed them their first district loss since 2019.
But Boerne’s best game against the Mules may have come last year in the regional championship game at Alamo Stadium on Dec. 5. A late score gave the Greyhounds the 56-49 victory in a classic.
One thing that Sawyer pointed out is that the Greyhounds haven’t won at Orem Stadium in recent history. Of Boerne’s two wins last year over the Mules, one was at home and the other was at a neutral site. In their two losses to the Mules in 2021 and 2024, both were at Orem Stadium when Sawyer was an assistant.
“Since I’ve been here, we haven’t won there,” he said. “The key is we’ve got to execute and play a complete game, which I don’t still feel like we have.”
The Mules have a new head coach but haven’t missed a beat. They are 4-0 to start the season just like the Greyhounds.
“They look good, they’ve pretty much kept things the same with their new head coach,” Sawyer said. “Their quarterback and running backs are really good and their defensive line is good. They’re playing with a ton of confidence.”
When asked if he thought Friday’s contest would be high scoring or low scoring, Sawyer said he wasn’t sure how it would play out.
“I don’t care if it’s 3-0 or 100-99, as long as we get the win,” he said. “It would be great to beat them again.”
