Comfort looking to fine tune, heal up during bye week

The Comfort High football team is off this Friday and the bye week couldn’t have come at a better time for the Bobcats.

Comfort hopes to use the downtime to rest and get ready for Poth when the Bobcats host the Pirates for their district opener on Oct. 2.

Bobcats coach Jay Rieken said it’ll help to have two weeks in between games.

“We’ve got to heal up and try to game plan for Poth,” he said. “We’ll see what we can do, we just need to get healthy. We may have to move some players around to different positions, but we should be near 100 percent by the time we play Poth.”

Comfort closed out non-district at 1-3. They won their opener against Brady, but dropped their last three to Crystal City, Ingram Moore and Johnson City.

The Bobcats were down 35-0 last week against Johnson City but hit a couple of big plays late to make it 35-14. Cole Young caught touchdown passes of 65 and 93 yards from Omar Rivera in the fourth quarter.

“We kept pushing it and got our playmakers involved,” Rieken said. “We hit some big plays.”

Poth is 3-1 and plays Blanco this week in a battle of district heavyweights. Rieken said he’ll get some film on Poth this week and start game planning for them, but added that he knows what he’s going to see from the Pirates.

“They’re good, they run the spread and throw the ball and run the ball well,” he said. “They mix it up well.”

After Poth, Comfort has Nixon-Smiley, Stockdale, Karnes City, Young Men’s Leadership Academy on the schedule and then closes out district action at
