Geneva School of Boerne did some good things in last Friday’s football game at Brazos Christian, but they also made some mistakes and those are the things Eagles head coach Adam Foren wants to clean up before this Friday’s district contest against Corpus Christi John Paul II.
Kickoff for Friday’s contest between Geneva (4-1, 0-1) and Corpus Christi John Paul II (0-5, -01) is set for 7 p.m. in Boerne.
The Eagles suffered their first loss of the season at Brazos Christian in their district opener, 49-23, but on the bright side they had almost 500 yards of total offense after they threw for 418 and ran for 76.
But Geneva also turned it over four times after Brazos Christian came up with three interceptions and a fumble. The defense also gave up some big plays and those are things Foren said you can’t do against a good team.
“We were on the road against a quality opponent and in all three phases of the game we had shortcomings,” he said. “We didn’t stop the run enough and we gave up too many explosive plays. They pressured our quarterback and we put up some 50-50 balls that they won and turned it over too many times.”
Brazos Christian played in the TAPPS state championship game last year and Foren gave them credit for challenging his team and showing them things they need to work on.
“We faced adversity and made some uncharacteristic mistakes,” he said. “We want to fix those things and have a sense of urgency about it.”
Friday’s opponent, Corpus Christi John Paul II, is struggling and hasn’t won a game this year. After Friday, the Eagles are off, and Foren said they want to have a strong game before going into their bye week.
“We have a chance to go 5-1 into the turn,” he said. “For us, it’s about our process and we want to go into the bye week having improved in all three phases of the game.”
Geneva was down 21-3 at halftime in last Friday’s game. They played better in the second half but were still outscored 28-20.
“Give credit to (Brazos Christian) because they’re a good team, but a lot of it was us,” Foren said. “These are the types of teams we’ll see in November and we’d like to play them again.”
Caleb Quitadamo threw 54 passes and completed 39 of them for 418 yards and three touchdowns, against three interceptions.
Chase Doran caught 16 passes for 144 yards and a score, Reid Aderholt tallied 8 catches for 80 yards and a TD, Shae McNew snagged 9 catches for 83 yards and Luke Abuzeid hauled in 3 catches for 56 yards and a touchdown.
McNew led the ground game with 47 yards on 11 carries and Quitadamo finished with 23 yards on 5 totes for the offense that also lost a fumble.
After the bye week, Geneva has Bay Area Christian, New Braunfels Christian Academy, Holy Cross and then St. Francis Episcopal.
