Boerne Champion hosted Alamo Heights Tuesday at the Charger tennis courts with the 26-5A title up for grabs.
Both the Chargers and Mules entered the contest without a loss in 26-5A and the winner would complete a perfect district season and earn the title of league champs.
While the effort was there for the Chargers, the Mules just had too much firepower and defeated Champion, 14-5.
It’s only the second loss of the season for the Chargers team that slips to 15-2 overall and closes out district play at 5-1 and as the second-place team in 26-5A behind the Mules.
Champion opens the playoffs on Monday against MacArthur at the Blossom Tennis Courts, 12 p.m.
Against the Mules, Alamo Heights won six of seven doubles matches to take the early 6-1 lead, with Champion’s only win coming in mixed doubles.
The Mules then won the next five singles matches to clinch it, but the teams played all 19 matches. Alamo Heights was up 13-2 at one point, but Champion won three of the last four matches on the Charger courts to get to five wins.
