Geneva enters break at 5-1, will look to finish strong down the stretch

Geneva School of Boerne has looked good so far through its first six football games as they rolled to a 5-1 record (1-1 in district) going into their bye week.

After taking this Friday off, the Eagles have four district games left. They host Bay Area Christian on Oct. 9, visit New Braunfels Christian Academy on Oct. 15, host Holy Cross on Oct. 23 and then close out the regular season on Oct. 30 at St. Francis Episcopal.

TAPPS, the governing body for a lot of the private schools in Texas, moved up the start of the football season by a week and they will close out the regular season in October. TAPPS will decide a state champion by the end of November instead of letting the season bleed into December.

With four regular-season games left on the schedule, Geneva coach Adam Foren said he likes how his team is playing but added that there are always areas to improve and that’s what they’ll work on during the bye week.

“We have to focus on ball security and blocking on offense and tackling in open space and alignment on defense,” he said. “We have a big week of practice, knowing we have four important district games coming up.”

Injuries are part of the game and the Eagles have held up fairly well there. The week off gives them time to heal up for their stretch run during the final month of the regular season.

“We’ll be 100 percent with our starters coming out of the bye week,” Foren said. “We just got back our starting linebacker last week and will be bringing back our starting left tackle after the bye.”

In their five wins, Geneva scored 48, 49, 49, 50 and 56 points and in their lone loss to Brazos Christian, the Eagles were held to 23 points but tallied 500 yards of offense and hope to face Brazos Christian this year.

“Brazos Christian is a type of team we’ll see in November (during the playoffs) and we’d like to see them again,” Foren said.
