LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Education: Do the math

Editor, Gov. Greg Abbott is campaigning on a false promise of eliminating local property taxes for Texas homeowners and cutting local spending.

While this bumper sticker type of one-liner sounds good, voters need to understand that Article 7 of the Texas Constitution requires state support and maintenance to provide public free schools.

He intentionally does not provide an alternative plan to meet the language in the law. In other words, where does he intend to find the funds to meet the Texas constitution’s requirement?

Voters need to remember that the reason Texas ranks fifth in the nation in property taxes is mainly because our state places more on our local governments to make up for the lack of state contributions.

Texas ranks about 47th in state contributions to public schools, making local districts raise taxes on their residents in order to “keep the lights on.”

Failure from this governor and his friends to fully fund public schools causes widespread deficits, certified teacher shortages, poor teacher pay and inability to keep up with inflation.

Do the math: Less money from Abbott and Republicans is the main cause for increased local property taxes.

It’s time for new leadership; vote Democrat. It’s your money and your public schools.
