Bobcats visit Nixon-Smiley in search of district win

Comfort High will be on the road for the second straight week as they visit Nixon-Smiley in search of their first district win in football.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Nixon-Smiley.

The Bobcats are coming off a 37-14 setback at Poth last week. Comfort was supposed to host the game, but they switched fields with the Pirates since they have turf, while Bobcat Stadium is grass. Comfort coach Jay Rieken said he felt like it was a safety issue.

“We got five inches of rain on Thursday and if it had rained at all on Friday, the field would have been slick and unsafe for the kids,” he said. “Plus, we were supposed to be dealing with thunderstorms and some lightening and Poth was only going to get rain, so we flipped the 26 and 27 schedules.”

Last Friday’s game was moved up to 4 p.m. to stay ahead of the weather and played in daylight. The Bobcats held the early lead against Poth but couldn’t maintain it over the final three quarters.

“They hit a couple of chunk plays that swung the game. We gave up some long runs and made some mistakes that hurt us,” Rieken said. “I don’t think the score reflects it, but we played good and we gave ourselves a chance. We had 300 yards of offense but not enough points on the board.”

The Bobcats have thrown the ball a lot more this year and Rieken said there’s a reason for that.

“We’re throwing but we have to be able to run the ball and we haven’t been able to run so we started throwing it,” he said. “That was another reason I didn’t mind moving the game to turf, because I knew we were going to be throwing and we needed the footing.” Comfort slipped to 1-4 overall and sits at 0-1 in district, while Nixon-Smiley is 1-1 in league play after they routed YMLA, 83-6, and lost to Blanco last week, 56-12. The Mustangs are 3-3 overall and Rieken said they remind him of a couple of teams that Comfort has played this year.

“Their defense is pretty good and is ahead of their offense,” he said. “They remind me of Johnson City and Crystal City, good hard-nose defenses.”
