Boerne Champion is coming off its bye week and will host Seguin on Friday at BISD Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Chargers and Matadors have met the last four years in district action and have split their four games after Champion won in 2025 and in 2023, while the Matadors claimed victories in 2024 and 2022.
One of the games, a 73-66 victory by Seguin set a Boerne ISD Stadium record for most combined points scored in a game with 139.
While it remains to be seen if this year’s contest will be a shootout, the Chargers have shown that they can score points quickly in 2026. Champion comes in averaging 58 points a game and is 6-0, while Seguin is struggling this year.
The Matadors graduated 6-foot-7 quarterback Corey Dailey, who is now playing at the University of Pittsburgh, and the Matadors are off to a 1-5 start this year (1-3 in district).
Champion coach Blane Ellis said there are other reasons Seguin is struggling this year.
“They have a couple of things they are sorting through,” he said. “They have a new head coach and haven’t had a lot of success this year, but it’s a transition style year for them as they get comfortable with their new system.”
Gary Guitierrez came from John Jay and wasn’t hired until this past June. He previously was an assistant with Seguin and is back with the Matadors. He only had about a month to try and get things ready before practice began in August.
Seguin’s only win this year came vs Cedar Creek, 49-28.
Ellis said they worked on their Seguin game plan during their bye week as they tried to heal up from typical football injuries that teams go through this time of year.
“We started implementing that game plan and at the same time we’re trying to get healthy,” he said. “The bumps and bruises we have are normal, but we backed off hard contact during the bye to get our legs back.”
While Ellis says they never look too far ahead, he admits they did take a peek at twotime state champs Smithson Valley during the bye week, their opponent on Oct. 23. It could be a matchup of undefeated teams and for the district title when they meet at Smithson Valley next week.
“We even looked at Smithson Valley, but all while being mindful of the present,” he said.
