Boerne High takes its perfect record on the road Friday and visits Liberty Hill. The Greyhounds are 2-0 in district (6-0 overall) and the Panthers are 2-1 in district (4-3 overall).
BHS is coming off a 63-35 win over NB Long Creek, while the Panthers suffered their first district loss last week at the hands of Alamo Heights, 63-31.
One thing that will affect the Panthers going forward is the fact that they opened a new school in the district, Liberty Hill Legacy Ranch, and have split their talent base.
Greyhounds coach Brett Sawyer said the Panthers are still good despite the district opening a new school.
“They’re Liberty Hill and they still run their offense, the Slot T,” he said. “They still do everything you know them for, and you have to be disciplined against their run game.”
Despite losing 63-31 to Alamo Heights, the Panthers ran for 400 yards on the ground.
“They’re still good and keep pounding the ball,” Sawyer said. “They still run it just fine.”
Sawyer added that the Panthers don’t appear to be down despite the new school opening in the district.
“I don’t think it’s affected them yet, it may affect them down the road,” he said. “But you can’t really tell on film. The new school doesn’t have seniors and that’s the majority of who’s playing for Liberty Hill this year. You can’t tell the difference right now.”
Despite being 6-0, Sawyer says they still haven’t peaked.
“In order to play the way we want to play, you have to execute at a high level and we did that at times last Friday,” he said. “But I still feel like we’re only playing at about 70 to 75 percent of where we can play. I’d love to be peaking pretty quick, but if we don’t peak until the end of the regular season, great.”
One thing the Greyhounds did last Friday was run the hook-and-ladder play. After the receiver caught it, he pitched it to one of the linemen, Parker Young, who didn’t score but took the ball down to the one-yard line and the offense punched it in from there.
“The guys are teasing him because he didn’t score,” said Sawyer, whose team ran the same play for a touchdown in a playoff game last year with Jonny Waters.
Boerne scored 56 of their 63 points by halftime and was outscored 21-7 in the second half. What helped Long Creek is that they scored a TD, recovered an onside kick and scored again. They tried another onside kick again and recovered, but it was negated because of a penalty.
Sawyer argued at the time that the first onside kick shouldn’t have counted either because they made contact with his players before the ball went 10 yards. The kicking team can’t recover the ball until it goes 10 yards, but they also can’t touch any members of the opposing team until the ball goes 10 yards as well.
“It was an illegal contact,” he said. “I had to remind the referees about that after the first kick.”
