Champion XC teams sweep at 26-5A meet, for boys its 19th straight district title

SEGUIN — Boerne Champion swept all four District 26-5A cross country races Wednesday morning at Starcke Park in Seguin and had the top finisher in each race.

The Champion boys varsity team started the day by winning their 19th straight district title, while the girls followed and won the 26-5A crown as well. The two Charger JV teams swept as well to make it a clean sweep for the program.

The Chargers boys varsity team has won every district title since the school opened in the fall of 2008. Champion coach Sheila West said the boys are aware of the streak and don’t want to be the ones to end it.

“I love the tradition here, I think it’s important to the guy’s team,” she said. “I have a large group of seniors and it’s something that’s very important to them and they’ve passed it on to the next group. I’m proud of them, it’s important to the community and it’s important to Champion high school.”

Both varsity squads will race at Region IV-5A meet on Oct. 27 in Corpus Christi. The top four teams from there advance to state set for early November in Round Rock.
