Comfort visited Karnes City Friday in need of a district win

The postseason window is getting smaller on the Comfort football team but they still have a chance and will need a strong finish in their remaining three games if they’re going to have a chance at a playoff spot.

Comfort is 1-6 overall and 0-3 in district and visited Karnes City (1-6, 1-2) on Friday and had to win.

Stockdale (4-0) and Poth (3-0) have the top two spots in the district and are in pretty good shape, but after that, it’s bunched up between several teams. Blanco (2-2), Nixon-Smiley (2-2), Karnes City (1-2), Comfort (0-3) and YMLA (0-3) are fighting for the last two spots heading into Friday.

Comfort has Karnes City, YMLA and Blanco left on the schedule. They have to win out and have to beat Blanco by 18 points in the last game of the year and that would get them in, according to Bobcats head coach Jay Rieken.

Karnes City is basically in the same boat as Comfort. Both teams were 1-6 overall entering Friday, but the Badgers have won a district game against YMLA, 49-14, on Oct. 9, a team the Bobcats face on Oct. 30.

Comfort’s last win came in their season opener against Brady (32-29) on Aug. 28, and they want to right the ship. The Bobcats put up a good fight against district-leading Stockdale last week and were up 7-0 and leading by eight points at one point, but the Brahmas tied it and then pulled ahead by halftime, 21-14. They outscored Comfort in the second half, 20-14, for the 41-28 victory.

Comfort did most of its damage on the ground last week and scored four rushing touchdowns after Omar Rivera ran for two scores, while Gabe Gonzalez and Jared Valadez both punched it in on the ground.

The Bobcats struggled through the air and only completed two of eight passes for 51 yards but rushed for 284 yards on the ground. Rivera led the ground attack with 126 yards on 15 carries, while Valadez and Gonzalez both had one catch each.
