Greyhounds closing in on sixth district title in seven years

A win on Friday at New Braunfels will give the Boerne High football team its sixth district title in seven seasons.

The Greyhounds visit the Unicorns on Friday and kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Greyhounds coach Brett Sawyer said district titles still mean a lot to him and the team even though they have bigger goals than just winning a league crown.

“I’m a competitive guy and I always want to win a district championship; district championships are a huge deal,” he said. “We’re interested in winning every district game we play and expect to win.”

New Braunfels has won a lot of games over the years as well but is struggling this season. The Unicorns are winless in district at 0-4 and are 1-7 overall. Their only win so far came in non-district when they opened the season with a 38-7 win at Seguin on Aug. 28.

The New Braunfels school district opened a new school and Sawyer said the Unicorns have had a lot of injuries.

“It’s been a little of both, the new school and injuries,” he said. “They’re struggling right now, it’s been a tough year, but it happens sometimes and there’s nothing you can do about it, especially with injuries.”

Despite only notching one win this year, Sawyer said the Unicorns still have talented players.

“They’re not bad, I was telling our coaches that they may be the best 1-7 team I’ve ever seen,” he said. “They’re struggling to move the ball offensively, but their defense keeps them in games.”

Boerne is coming off a 49-7 win over Veterans Memorial last Friday in a game delayed by about two hours after a transformer on one of the light poles in the parking lot blew and caused a small fire on the pole at halftime.

The lights stayed on at the stadium, but it was recommended to school officials that they fix the issue before continuing the game. They had to turn off all the lights at the stadium to do so, and when the situation was fixed, they resumed action at about 10:30 p.m. with a running clock that ended the game quickly.

“We agreed that we wanted to finish on Friday, so shout out to the city of Boerne and all the Boerne ISD people for getting it up and running,” Sawyer said. “Hopefully down the road that pays off when something weird happens, we’ve been there.”

Zach Freasier caught four touchdown passes in the first half of last Friday’s game, while Jacob Hicks had another touchdown reception as Grant Sweeney tossed five TD passes in the first half for the 35-7 lead at the break.

Once the game resumed, the Hounds added two quick TDs in the second half that featured a running clock as Kole Traylor scored on a kickoff return and Callan Combs ran one into the end zone.
