VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS
Volleyball playoffs start this week for Boerne Champion, Boerne High and Comfort High, while Geneva School of Boerne began the postseason last week and continued second-round action on Tuesday after the Eagles won their opener on Saturday.
Boerne Champion
The Lady Chargers swept Alamo Heights Friday night (25-22, 25-20, 25-22) and claimed the district title with a record of 11-1.
Champion (31-7) goes into the 5A-DI playoff bracket and faces MacArthur (28-13) on Thursday at Alamo Convocation Center, 8 p.m.
The Lady Brahmas were third in their district behind Smithson Valley and New Braunfels with a record of 10-4.
Champion has made the playoffs in the last three years but was bounced in the first round the last two seasons by Cedar Park. Their last playoff win came in 2019 when they went three rounds deep before falling to Dripping Springs. It was also the same year they won their last district title.
Chargers coach Kelly McDaniel said winning a league crown was one of their goals this year. Their only loss in 26-5A came to Boerne High.
“We knew that this could be our year and I think the loss to Boerne in the first round (of district) made the girls realize that we can’t take anything for granted,” she said. “They battled through injuries and adversity and I’m just so glad that we were able to show enough grit to reach this outcome.”
Boerne High
The Lady Greyhounds (296) were second in the district at 10-2 and will face Seguin (20-22) in the first round at Davenport High School on Thursday, 6:30 p.m.
BHS swept John Jay last Friday (25-9, 25-14, 25-12) and was the only team in 26-5A that defeated the district champ Chargers this year.
This is Boerne’s first playoff appearance since 2023 when they lost in the first round. Their last playoff win came in 2020 when the Lady Hounds defeated Cuero.
BHS had a chance at the district title and led the district through the first round. Their last district title came in 2015 when they shared it with Fredericksburg.
Greyhounds coach Staci Lawrence said the team is ready to start the postseason.
“We’re very excited to show off the hard work these athletes have put into this team during the playoffs,” she said. “We knew this was a special group from the start of the season and we can’t wait to show everyone else who Greyhound volleyball is.”
Comfort High
Comfort went into Tuesday not sure which team they were going to play to start the playoffs. The Deer (20-19) were third in their district at 4-4 behind Ingram and Blanco.
District foes Llano and Florence were playing for fourth place in a tiebreaker match on Tuesday and that will affect whether Comfort goes big school (DI) or small school (DII) in the 3A postseason bracket.
The Deer will either play Stockdale (24-21) or Karnes City (19-15) depending on what happened between Llano and Florence on Tuesday.
Comfort is scheduled to play a warm-up match on Tuesday against Junction.
Geneva School of Boerne The Eagles won their playoff opener Saturday in Round Rock against Live Oak of Waco, 26-24, 25-15, 25-20.
Geneva (22-18) traveled to Conroe Covenant Christian (21-5) on Tuesday for their second-round match. The Cougars went 10-0 in district to win the league crown, while Geneva was 6-4 and the third-place team behind Holy Cross and New Braunfels Christian.
