com. Taken from the Greek word, enkaustikos, meaning “to burn in”, Encaustic painting is one of the world’s oldest art forms. The artists of Ancient Greece used wax paint to highlight features of marble statues at the Acropolis, murals, and sometimes to adorn architectural features. It was not long before Egyptians incorporated encaustic paint into paintings and the mummification process. The most well-known portraits of the period were the Faiyum Mummy Portraits. Inevitably, Encaustic painting spread to Rome where it was used in Roman portraits and mythology paintings done on panels. Encaustic paintings, beautifully preserved, were discovered at Herculaneum and Pompeii.

By mid- 19th century, Encaustic painting techniques had spread throughout Europe and in the 1950s and 1960s, Jasper Johns received lots of attention with his Flag series of Encaustic paintings. Today Encaustic is an extremely versatile medium that you can paint, print, collage and sculpt.
