Heights towers over Lady Chargers

Boerne Champion had its hands full with 6-foot-3 post Sophia Zadel from Alamo Heights during Tuesday’s non-district girls basketball game in San Antonio.

The Lady Chargers even tried double teaming Zadel but the junior tallied 26 points – 13 in the first quarter – to lead the Lady Mules past Champion, 71-45.

Tuesday’s loss drops the Lady Chargers to 4-7 overall. Champion was entered in the New Braunfels Canyon tournament this weekend.

Chargers coach Jason Sanders said Zadel was hard to handle.

“Their post is really good and we struggled to keep her off the boards,” he said. “We double teamed her for three quarters.”

The Mules were up 20-5 after one but Champion outscored AH in the second, 14-10, to trail at halftime, 30-19.

Heights had a strong third quarter and took the stanza, 23-16, to open up a 53-35 advantage.

AH closed it out by winning the final period, 18-10.

The Mules were 22 of 44 from 2-point range for 50 percent shooting and tallied 40 points in the paint. They finished with 50 rebounds, 20 on the offensive end.

Champion came up with 11 steals in the game and knocked down seven 3-pointers.

Addison Darter made four of those 3s, all in the third quarter, for 12 points, Cris Ramon and Bralyn Gault both netted 6 points, Adriana Barreiro and Taylor Burk finished with 5 points apiece, Abby Somer scored 3, while Kayla Ramirez, Ainsley Darter, Ainsley Serra and Hailey Winn all chipped in with 2 points.

Ramon recorded 5 assists and Barreiro had 3 steals.
