Boerne High suffered only its second loss of the season Monday night when the Greyhounds hosted John Jay in a non-district boys game in Boerne.
The 6A Mustangs galloped to a narrow win, 53-46, despite a late push by the Greyhounds. BHS is 7-2 overall and played in the Hondo Tournament this weekend.
Boerne was trailing by a point at the end of one, 11-10, but really struggled in the second and only managed 3 points, while the Mustangs hit for 15 to double up the Hounds by halftime, 26-13.
John Jay took the third quarter 17-11 to open up a 43-24 advantage by the time the game went to the final stanza.
The Hounds made a run at the Mustangs and outscored them 22-10 in the fourth but couldn’t catch them.
Freshman Hank Hendrix had a strong debut and finished with a double-double for Boerne after he scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Hendrix also led the team in assists with 3.
Nic Hernandez was also in double digits with 10 points, Casen Hoegemeyer added 8, Slade Salinas and Sam Holland both scored 6, while Noa Sanchez tallied 5.
Luke Fox came up with 2 steals and Julien Hartman snagged 5 boards and Holland reeled in 6 rebounds.
