Champion baseball sweeps Thunderbirds

SAN ANTONIO — Boerne Champion took care of the Wagner baseball team this week and swept the Thunderbirds with a home win Tuesday and a road victory Wednesday.

The Chargers start 26-5A action at 2-0 and are 14-4 overall.

Chargers 10, T-Birds 0 

Champion run ruled Wagner in their first meeting, 10-0, Tuesday in six innings at home.

The Chargers were up 1-0 and then had a big inning in the second with 5 runs for the 6-0 lead.

Champion added another in the third for the 7-0 advantage and then kicked in the mercy rule in the sixth with another 3 runs to make it 10-0.

The Chargers knocked out 11 hits and took advantage of four T-Bird errors.

Jordan Ballin walked and scored, Evan Kuhl singled, walked, drove in a run and scored once, Garland Whitehead singled, pushed in 3 runs and plated 2 runs, Cam Logan recorded 3 singles, pushed in 2 runs and scored once, Sam Miller knocked out 2 singles and collected 2 RBI, Gage Goldberg singled, Quinn Grable doubled and singled and scored twice, Aidan Smith doubled, pushed in a run and scored once, while Brock Browning scored a run.

Sawyer Smith went 5 innings on the hill to pick up the win and threw a 1-hit shutout and struck out 6, while only giving up 1 walk.

Jacob Schwope tossed in the sixth and didn’t give up a hit, fanned 1 and walked 1.

Chargers 9, T-Birds 1 

Wednesday’s game at Wagner took a strange twist after the home plate umpire was hit by a ball and had to leave, delaying the game for more than an hour while they found a replacement umpire.

It was close and tied at 1-1 when the game was halted but once it resumed, the Chargers ran away with it after they scored 2 runs in the third and then blew it open in the sixth with 6 runs.

Champion knocked out 12 hits and recorded 4 doubles.

Jordan Ballin singled, walked twice and scored a run, Evan Kuhl hit 3 singles, walked and scored twice, Brock Browning scored once, Garland Whitehead doubled and picked up an RBI, Cam Logan singled and scored, Gage Goldberg hit 2 singles and brought in 2 runs, Andrew Harrison doubled, Aidan Smith doubled, scored and collected 2 RBI, Owen Kuhl doubled and singled, pushed in 2 runs and scored once.

Matthew Booth started and went 5 innings on the bump. He scattered 4 hits, gave up 1 earned run, walked 3 and fanned 4.

Aidan Smith tossed 2 innings and yielded 2 hits, no runs 1 walk and struck out 1, while Jackson Melanson pitched 1 frame, didn’t surrender a hit, walk or run and sat down all three batters he faced.

The Chargers are at Veterans Memorial this Tuesday.
