Boerne High picked up a key win in district softball last Friday when the Lady Greyhounds hosted Canyon Lake in a 27-4A tussle.
Thanks to a Payton Dyal home run in the fifth to break open a tied ball game, the Lady Greyhounds went on to defeat the Lady Hawks, 6-3.
BHS is 13-12-1 overall and 2-1 in district. They visited Fredericksburg Tuesday and host Wimberley Thursday to close out the first round.
All of the runs scored in Friday’s game were scored in bunches of 3. The Lady Hounds took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third after a walk, single, a couple of errors and a sac fly helped BHS score its 3 runs.
It stayed that way until the top of the fifth when the Lady Hawks strung together a two-out rally to tie it up.
A double, 2 singles and 2 walks — 1 of them intentional — tied it up at 3-3 before Boerne could get out of the inning.
From there, it went to the bottom of the fifth and that’s when Dyal delivered the hit that eventually became the game winner. With one out in the frame, Dyal sent one over the leftfield fence to put BHS back on top 4-3.
Two Hawks errors and two Boerne singles pushed in 2 more runs to help the Lady Hounds score 3 runs in the frame for the 6-3 lead.
Canyon Lake put runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings but couldn’t score. The Hawks hit the ball well and outhit Boerne, 9-4 in the game but Canyon Lake also struggled in the field and committed 5 errors.
Dyal hit the game winner on her solo homer in the fifth and she also walked in the third and scored 2 runs in the contest.
Cerissa Nasis singled and scored, Riley Partin singled and drove in a run, Taylor Wilson plated 2 runs and Brooklynn Thomason singled and scored.
Jesseanna Aguirre threw all 7 innings and picked up the win on 94 pitches. She gave up 9 hits, 1 earned run, walked 4 and struck out 3.
