CORPUS CHRISTI — For the second straight season, Boerne and Davenport met in the regional championship match and for the second year in a row, the Lady Greyhounds prevailed over the Lady Wolves.
This year’s clash between the district foes went to penalty kicks where the BHS girls prevailed, 3-2.
The Lady Hounds improved to 22-1-3 and play Wednesday in Georgetown against Salado, 1:30 p.m.
Wednesday’s winner plays Thursday against the winner of Celina and Lumberton for the state championship, 2:30 p.m.
Boerne head coach Jeremy Shannon said he knew facing Davenport wasn’t going to be easy, especially since they had already seen them twice in district.
“The first two matches against Davenport were very, very tough,” he said. “The last one (before Saturday) went to a 0-0 tie. They’re good defensively and we’re good defensively, we’re pretty evenly matched. We knew it would be a close game, we knew we had to play well to stay with them and they had to play well to stay with us.”
Despite being evenly matched, Shannon didn’t necessarily see it going to penalty kicks.
“I didn’t anticipate it going all the way to PKs,” he said. “It was interesting and nerve racking and kind of stressful, but I felt like we had the best keeper in the district and it showed today.”
After 80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, it went to penalty kicks and Davenport made its first two and were up 2-1 after Avery Ukeiley made Boerne’s only kick through two rounds.
Davenport faltered after that and missed its final three. BHS goalkeeper Kinsley Sawyer saved one and the other two either went off the post or crossbar.
Sawyer said she was nervous but works on stopping penalty kicks during the season even though PKs aren’t used to determine winners during district play.
“You’re always going to be nervous but I had the confidence. I’ve been working on PKs for the last three years with coach (Lexi) Harms and it paid off,” she said. “All of (the Davenport kickers) were right footed and most of them went to my right side and I just had to guess right. That last one hit the post and I was not going to be able to get there, sometimes you have to have a bit of luck.”
Sophia Namvar converted her PK to tie it up at 2-2 after three kicks. After Davenport missed its fourth kick, Anna Darling knocked hers in for the 3-2 lead through four rounds.
Darling’s kick ended up being the clincher since the Wolves missed their fifth attempt.
Saturday’s win gives Boerne its third straight regional championship – 22-23-24. This one came after graduating 13 seniors last season.
“We rose to the occasion,” said Shannon about his team that tied and lost to Davenport in the regular season.
Vs. C.C. London
Corpus Christi London was basically playing a home match since their school is just a few minutes away from Cabaniss Field but that didn’t stop the Lady Hounds from rolling to a 3-0 win.
BHS scored two of its goals going into a stiff breeze of between 15 to 20 miles per hour that included gusts up to 30.
Kailey Stringfellow knocked in one last goal midway through the second half to make it 3-0.
Through five rounds of playoffs, the Lady Hounds have not surrendered a goal in regulation. The only goals they’ve given up in the postseason have been on penalty kicks to Davenport.
