BHS girls headed to state soccer tourney

MCALLEN – After getting eliminated by Calallen in last year’s playoffs, the Boerne girls soccer team wanted another opportunity to face the Lady Wildcats in the 2022 postseason.

Well, the Lady Hounds got another crack at Calallen last Saturday in the regional cham pionship match and it was sweet revenge for the Boerne girls team that won the region by defeating last year’s regionals champs, 3-2.

BHS improves to 20-3-5 and plays in the state semifinals on Wednesday against Celina at 11 a.m.

Boerne coach Jeremy Shannon said his team had Calallen on its radar all season.

“We’ve been talking about this all year, that’s one thing we had on our bucket list for this year is to get another opportunity at Calallen,” he said. “We knew we were the better team last year and it didn’t go our way.”

What was impressive about the Boerne victory is that they were down a player after leading scorer Kylie Combs received a red card and had to sit out the final 15 minutes of the match after making contact with the Wildcats goalie on a play.

When a team receives a red card, they aren’t able to replace that player, so Callen had an 11 to 10 advantage in players on the field but couldn’t score.

Combs said she had faith in her teammates.

“I knew they could do it if they dug deep, I’m so proud of them for pulling it out, this is so exciting for us,” she said. “I was counting down, I was so ready, they were holding me back on the sideline. I was so excited; I just ran out there and told the girls ‘good job.’”

Shannon said he was proud of how his team performed down the stretch.

“To come out and play the way that we did, we gutted it out in the last 15 minutes with a girl down and got the opportunity to score the goal at the very end,” he said. “They wanted it so bad and it showed right there with a girl down. They rallied around each other.”

Interestingly, Boerne scored all 3 of its goals going into the wind. Combs knocked in the team’s first two goals but every time she scored; the Wildcats tied it up.

Shannon said his team doesn’t mind playing against the wind.

“When we go into the wind, we keep the ball on the deck so it helps us out,” he said. “Going into the wind is advantageous, but sometimes the ball takes off and it’s hard to catch up to.”

With the score tied at 2-2 and less than 10 minutes left in regulation, Taylor Hudson controlled the ball from 35 yards out and sailed a kick high into the air that probably would have been long in normal weather conditions, but the stiff breeze held it up and the ball dropped in right under the top cross bar.

Hudson said she couldn’t gauge how good of a kick it was because of the wind.

“I was trying to score but I didn’t think it was going to go in but it ended up going in,” she said. “With the wind, you have to kick it stronger, but I didn’t know it was going in until it hit the back of the net.”

Because of the red card, Combs will have to sit out Wednesday’s semifinals match, but hopes they can win so she can play in the 4A finals set for Friday at 2:30 p.m.

“Its’ going to be really hard for me not to play but I’m glad I get to be there and cheer them on at least,” she said.

Vs. Santa Gertrudis

Boerne blew out Kingsville Santa Gertrudis in Friday’s regional semis match, 7-0.

Hannah Bowen and Gigi Hernandez both recorded 2 goals, while Taylor Hudson, A’Marie Ramirez and Tommie Rand all scored single goals.
