When it’s noon in Boerne everyone knows it thanks to a decades old siren that sounds every day. This bit of Boerne nostalgia is sorely missed when the siren is out of service.
During the early October rain storms, an electric line powering the siren was severed. The staff at City Hall quickly noticed something was wrong because the siren is located right behind their offices on Blanco Road. City electric crews completed the repairs and the siren is back in service.
While the historic purpose of the siren was for emergency alerts and a call to firefighters to respond to incidents, the siren is no longer used for that purpose.
Its only function these days is to sound off at noon and the Boerne community has come to expect it. Some consider it homage to a simpler time; others think it’s quirky; but whatever the position, the city plans to keep it functioning as long as possible.
