ON THE JOURNEY
If you pay much attention to the typical conversation in a group of Christians who are sincere about their faith, you are likely to hear something about somebody wanting to get closer to God.
In reality most Christians want to get closer to God, don’t they? The truth is most of us have been taught since we were in the nursery that our primary goal in life should be to get closer to God.
There are of course many ways to go about this, most of them fairly obvious, such as Bible reading, prayer, quiet time, sharing the gospel and tithing. You may know of some others.
Now I hate to disappoint you if you have believed this all your life, but it simply is not true. Don’t misunderstand me. I am not saying that your pastor or priest or teacher has intentionally lied to you. But many do have a very different understanding of Scripture.
You may have been led to believe that God will get closer to you when you are obedient. Why would reading your Bible make you closer to God? Let’s look at some Scripture.
Colossians 1:27 ” … to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
1 Corinthians 6:17 “But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him.”
Colossians 3:3-4 “For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.”
There are many more scriptures we could consider but just looking at these three, what do we see?
I don’t want to sound too self-assured here, but I do have a rather simple question. How does one get closer to something that is living inside them? Just asking.
In the Corinthian verse we are in him. Then to sew things all up we are in Christ and he is in God.
Now somebody explain to me how you are going to go about getting closer to God by some good behavior. I am a little confused about how that works. Actually I am not confused at all, because it doesn’t work.
If you have been been operating under the dark cloud that requires you to do things to get closer to Jesus, I invite you to give it up. It is just not sound theology.
Listen to what Jesus says in John 17:22-24 (MSG) “The same glory you gave me, I gave them, so they’ll be as unified and together as we are – I am in them and you in me. Then they’ll be mature in this oneness, and give the godless world evidence that you’ve sent me and loved them in the same way you’ve loved me. Father, I want those you gave me to be with me, right where I am, so they can see my glory, the splendor you gave me, having loved me long before there ever was a world.”
Friends, if you have invited Jesus to be your Savior you are one with Him today. You do not have to wait until heaven to be joined with him, you already are, right here, right now, as close as you ever will be. You cannot get any closer.
Rest in who you are.
