The Boerne Family YMCA is holding a free community event Saturday, April 27, to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active at the annual YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, the Y’s national initiative to improve health and well-being for kids and families.

And for the older kids, the Y will hold its first ever Teen Night, tonight, April 26, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

There will be free pizza, games – both inside and out - snacks, dancing and more.

Healthy Kids Day, sponsored by the Howard Johnson by Wyndham hotel brand, is an opportunity to ignite children’s imaginations so that they can imagine what they’ll accomplish this summer.

The free community event will take place at the Boerne Family YMCA, 820 Adler Rd. from 9 to 11 a.m., and will feature active play and educational activities, such as arts and crafts, a moon bounce, gymnastics at the Boerne Gymnastics Center’s Gym Bus, a Boerne Fire Department fire truck and healthy snacks.

Healthy Kids Day is celebrated at over 1,500 Y’s across the country with over one million participants and works to get more kids moving and learning, creating habits that they can continue all summer long.

When kids are out of school, they can face hurdles that prevent them from reaching their full potential. Research shows that without access to out-of-school learning activities, kids fall behind academically and gain weight twice a fast during summer than the school year.

“When a child is healthy, happy and supported they can make great things happen,” Paul Giguere, executive director of the Boerne Y, said. “We believe in the potential of all children, and we strive to help kids find that potential within themselves. Healthy Kids Day is a great opportunity to educate families and motivate kids to stay active in spirit, mind and body throughout the summer,” Giguere said.
