Boerne, Fair Oaks Ranch, Comfort and Kendall County are full of people who make a difference day in and day out. And The Boerne Star is going to recognize one of those individuals who goes above and beyond the normal call of duty.
The Star is going to name a 2021 Citizen of the Year from nominations received from the community. The recognized person could have done a one-time thing worthy of the award or spent the entire year helping others in his or her community.
“Many organizations give out some incredible awards for this or that,” Star General Manager Keith E. Domke said. “But, no one truly is recognized as our ‘citizen of the year.’ We’re going to change that.”
The award will be given out annually, Domke said.
The criteria to be considered for the award is simple. Any person who has made a positive impact that has benefitted others in The Star’s coverage area, which covers Kendall County and Fair Oaks Ranch, can be nominated. The nominated individual must live or work in the paper’s coverage area.
“We’re looking for that truly special person,” Domke said. “So many great people do so many great things around here, and we want to recognize the best of the best.”
Nominations can be submitted in two ways. They can be emailed to Domke at email@example.com or they can be brought into the newspaper office at 941 N. School St. The deadline is Monday, December 13.
The nominations must include the following to be considered: The name of the person submitting the nomination and his or her’s email and phone number and the name of the person being nominated, that person’s contact information and a detailed account of why the individual is being nominated. Anonymous or self-nominations will not be accepted.
“Give us the details,” Domke said. “Tell us why this person deserves to be our citizen of the year. Tell us his or her story so we can pass it along to our community and give that individual some much-deserved recognition.”
Again, the nomination can be for a one-time reason or for multiple things the person has done throughout the year. He or she can be a businessperson, a volunteer or anyone who did something extraordinary. The reasons for the nomination must have occurred during the 2021 calendar year.
The goal is to recognize outstanding and exemplary acts of kindness or heroism during the 2021 calendar year.
The Boerne Star staff will select the winner from the nominations submitted. The recipient will be announced in January.
Any questions may be directed to Domke at his email address or by calling The Star office at 830-249-2441.
“We hope we receive tons of nominations,” Domke said. “There certainly are countless people out and about who deserve to be considered for our community’s ‘citizen of the year.’ We just need help from you finding that person.”
