Dec. 31, 1941 – April 23, 2019
Daniel “Dan” Gaubatz Sr. passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at the age of 77. Born and raised in San Antonio, Dan grew up as a member of Grace Lutheran Church. There he learned the values that would be the principles he tried to live his life by. As a student at Thomas Jefferson High School he met lifelong friends and his future wife, MaryEllen McCall, whom he would marry in the Spring of 1961.
After high school, Dan attended Texas Christian University before beginning work for the printing machine manufacturing giant, Addressograph Multigraph Corporation. He would rise up through the sales ranks with consistent high performance and “100 Club” successes. Prior to moving on to other opportunities, Dan became the branch manager of the Beaumont office.
Later, he would apply the skills he developed with AM Corp to move into new and exciting opportunities. Eventually Dan found a passion as a Texas Licensed Real Estate Broker. In that role, he helped to broker numerous commercial real estate sales throughout north Texas during the high-growth years of the late ‘70s and ‘80s.
Eventually Dan settled into the role of a Texas Licensed Insurance broker. Specializing in Medicare, he was truly able to help customers at a stage in their lives when they most needed it. He found the work satisfying on both personal and professional levels – often times becoming good friends with long-time customers.
Throughout his life, Dan tried to apply the principles he learned in the church in his day-to-day life. He always strove to treat people as he would wish to be treated, to be honest and forthright, and to put his faith in God during both the hard times and the good. It was that faith in God, the church, and his family that helped him carry on after his Multiple Myeloma diagnosis in 2002.
Dan underwent treatment for the myeloma off and on for nearly 17 years under the expert care of Dr. Gregory J. Guzley. He would also face challenges with diabetes and a heart condition. Dan faced three heart surgeries as well as the loss of his right leg over the course of those years. Despite all of that he would never waiver in his dedication to providing for his family and doing right by his customers.
On Monday, April 8, Dan was admitted to Methodist Hospital in San Antonio due to concerns over the progression of his myeloma. On Tuesday, April 23, he passed away due to complications from the condition.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents and brother. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, MaryEllen Gaubatz, and his three sons Daniel Jr., Dennis and Andrew.
The Gaubatz family would like to extend its deep gratitude to Dr. Guzley. The outstanding care, compassion and friendship he provided throughout the years has been deeply appreciated. Dan’s respect and gratitude for the work Dr. Guzley did could not be overstated and the family shares that sentiment.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 1, at 1 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Boerne.
