Elaine Edith Zaner

April 13, 1932 – July 3, 2021

Elaine Edith Zaner passed away on July 3, 2021, at the age of 89. She was born in Toledo, Ohio, on April 13, 1932, to Ralph and Frances Hoeling Holmes. At the age of 10, Elaine had lost both parents.

Elaine was taken in and raised by her older sister. At the age of 19, she met the love of her life on a train in Ohio. Bill Zaner was returning from service in the U.S. Army, and Elaine was headed to Texas to reunite with extended family. Elaine and Bill began a relationship that lasted 61 years.

They started their family in Denver, Colorado, and later moved to Houston, Texas, and then moved to Boerne, Texas, in 1973.

Bill was a popular local landscape artist in Boerne. He opened an art gallery on Main Street known as Bill Zaner’s Art Haus.

Elaine was very active in the community. Her main legacy was always helping people. She was the youngest of six siblings, two of which are still living. One of Bill’s favorite descriptions of Elaine was that she was an unstoppable force of nature. If Elaine said she was going to do something, she would never let you down even if you weren’t her favorite person.

Elaine leaves behind her two children, Suzan and her husband, Paul Newkirk, of West Cliff, Colorado, and her son, Matthew Richard Zaner of Boerne; four grandchildren, Sarah Polka (Michael), William Newkirk and Zachary and Zoe Zaner; and three great-grandchildren, Bonnie Zaner, Ethan Depierro and Ashton Hagen. She is also survived by her two sisters, Vivian Holmes-Crosby of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Susan Rich of Texas City, Texas; three nephews, Jimmy Holmes, Texwayne Holmes and Butch Holmes; and one niece, Vicki Holmes.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2021, from 12 noon until 5 p.m. at the Texas Treasures Fine Art Gallery located at 605 S. Main St., Boerne, Texas.  A short service will be held at 1:30 p.m.
