Gerald Earl Lane was born in Alix, Alberta, Canada, on May 28, 1940, the son of Vernon Earl Lane and Retha Manola (Wright) Lane. In November 1941 he moved with his family to a farm in Rimby, Alberta. He lived there until 1947 when at the age of 6 he and his family moved by train to Walla Walla, Washington, where he attended both elementary and high school. Jerry then went on to college, graduating in 1963 with a teaching degree and later earned a Master’s degree in school administration, both from Washington State University.

In June 1968, Jerry was united in marriage to Carol McKenzie. They shared over 40 years of marriage before Carol’s death in January 2012.

Jerry started his career in education in Richland, Washington. His first position was as a sixth grade teacher. From there he went on to become an elementary school principal and ended his 31-year career as a high school principal, all within the Richland school district.

During the summer months while in college and for approximately his first five years of teaching, Jerry worked as a logger in Dubois, Wyoming. Jerry had a love of the outdoors and in 1973 started spending summers at the Oregon coast. For approximately a 10-year period his love of fishing and his dory boat grew into his becoming a commercial fisherman selling his catch of halibut, salmon and cod. Although no longer a commercial fisherman, he continued to fish, pull crabpots full of Dungeness crab and dig clams.

In November 2013 Jerry was united in marriage to Jeanette Rizzuti Reker. For the past five years they have spent six months living in Boerne and six months living in Pacific City, Oregon, which is home to the Dory fleet. Meeting at the ages of 15 and 13, Jeanette considers Jerry to be her Alpha and Omega.

Jerry is survived by his sister Esther and husband Louie Hamm of Woodinville, Washington; two daughters, Kristi Price and husband Rob of Everett, Washington, and Brenda Pribyl and husband Richard of Olympia, Washington. as well as two stepsons Mark Medcalf, Michael Medcalf and wife Jan of Las Vegas; and one stepdaughter, Michelle Medcalf Gray and husband Nathan Gray of Holton, Kansas.

He is also survived by three granddaughters, Kaitlyn, Kelsey and Kylee of Everett; and step grandchildren Tony Edwards and wife Morgan of Alamosa, Colorado, Christopher Medcalf and wife Mariah of Army Base in Italy, Michayla Peer, Nicholas Clark and Isabelle Gray, Holton, KS. Michael James and Ethan Medcalf of Las Vegas, NV. Also three great-granddaughters, Skye and Aurie Edwards of Alamosa, Colorado, and Melanie Peer of Holton, Kansas, as well as several nephews and cousins.

A Mass will be celebrated honoring Jerry’s life on Tuesday, May 7, at 11 a.m., in St Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, Boerne. A reception after the funeral Mass will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Cana Ballroom St. Peter’s Catholic Church

"Bragging rights to Jerry …. Yep – I see it now. All of his Dory launches will be flawless, crab pots full, seated near the glory of God dining on blackberries, smoked salmon and Texas pecans."
