Letha Joy “Penny” McElroy of Kingsland passed away on Feb. 10, 2019, at the age of 86. She was born on Oct. 13, 1932, in Menard to Edwin Ray and Lula Caroline (Bales) Warren. She spent many years in San Antonio, Fredericksburg, and Fair Oaks Ranch before finally settling in Kingsland.

Penny was a gentle and compassionate person and will be dearly missed. She was known for her thoughtfulness, intelligence and generosity. Family and friends knew she would remember every special occasion and could always count on a card arriving to commemorate the day. They also knew she would always welcome them in to her home. And of course, every day was Christmas in her house as shown by her huge Santa Claus collection. Penny’s greatest passions were her family, reading, volunteering and traveling with her niece Janet. Her favorite adventures included cruising the Amazon and Rhine rivers, voyaging across the Atlantic, driving throughout Alaska and exploring New Zealand. Penny was especially happy to have realized her dream of living many years on a beautiful farm in Fredericksburg with her husband Rex.

Penny was a graduate of Southwest Texas State University and worked at Franklin Life Insurance and USAA. After moving to Fredericksburg, she started and proudly operated a successful boutique. She was a life member ofthe United Methodist Women’s organization and the Hill Country Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She served on the Hill Country Memorial Hospital Governing Board and was a member of the Member Executive Board. She was on the Texas Association of Hospital Auxiliaries Board serving on many committees and as vice president. Penny was also a volunteer for Hill Country Family Services and the Marble Falls Animal Rescue.

Penny was preceded in death by husbands, the Rev. Cole V. Smith and Rex McElroy; her brother Robert Warren and wife Margaret; sister-in-law Develand Warren; and daughter-in-law Lorna Friend Smith. She is survived by her brother Ray Warren; three sons and their wives, Rix and Deborah Smith, Randy and Anne-Dominique Smith, and Ron and Laura Smith; five grandchildren, Corinne Smith, Melissa Smith, Lisa Smith, Andrea Spruill and Zachary Spruill; as well as a host of other relatives and dear friends she loved very much.

Donations in Penny’s name may be sent to the Hill Country Youth Ranch P.O. Box 67 Ingram, Texas 78025.
