Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 to – Oct. 15) is a time to celebrate the many contributions made to our nation by Latino Americans. From the performing arts to science, Latinos have enriched our nation with their many achievements.
The Patrick Heath Public Library’s Youth Department is proud to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month on Saturday, Oct. 13. Music, art, literature and science will be spotlighted through illustrious guests and engaging activities for children.
Our morning begins at 10:30 a.m. with a Latino-themed STREAM, at which we will feature various activity stations in science, technology, reading, engineering, art and math. Children of all ages will have the opportunity to design, craft and create, including culinary delights.
We proudly showcase the masterful musician Mark Anthony Cruz at noon. Mr. Cruz is an internationally known, award-winning classical guitarist, compose, and professor of music.
He placed first in the 2013 Winfield International Fingerstyle Competition. He has been a featured guitarist at festivals, workshops and conference throughout the world. His numerous CDs and compositions have received rave reviews on internationally syndicated radio program Classical Guitar Alive hosted by Tony Morris, as well as in journals such as “Soundboard.”
When Mr. Cruz is not performing or composing, he shares his gift of music. An esteemed teacher of music, he has served as professor of guitar at Texas State University, San Marcos, for 18 years. Don’t miss this concert for all ages!
Our day of festivities will conclude with a presentation by author, artist and storyteller Xavier Garza. Born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, Mr. Garza’s tales largely reflect his experiences growing up in the little border town of Rio Grande City.
He has shared his stories throughout Texas, Arizona and Washington. Mr. Cruz’s books have received several honors, including Honor Book, Américas Award and starred review from Críticas Magazine.
He is also the recipient of the American Library Association’s 2012 Pura Belpré Author Honor Book award.
POP UP DINNERS
LOVE Boerne Families, a program of the Boerne Community Coalition (BCC), in partnership with the Patrick Heath Public Library, offers monthly Pop Up Community Dinners for families whose children either participate in or qualify for the meal program at school.
This is an opportunity for families and children to enjoy a healthy meal while discovering and enjoying the library. Our goal is to nourish both the body and the minds of children, instilling a joy of lifelong learning.
Our hope is that each month a church, business or community member will sign up to provide either the meal or portions of it.
Our library is very grateful for the opportunity to help our community’s neediest and for the partnership with BCC. Questions? Contact Jessica at email@example.com
We are most grateful to both the Friends of Boerne Public Library and the Boerne Public Library Foundation for their continued and most generous support of our Youth Department.
