Chipman enjoys 103rd birthday

BOERNE — Juanita Herff Chipman celebrated her 103rd birthday on April 17. She grew up loving the land and still, to this day, lives on the Herff Ranch.

She spends her days on her porch overlooking the hills and watching the birds and wildlife. Although she spent much of her life living in San Antonio, she and her husband, Guy, moved to the Ranch as soon as they could, about 20 years ago.

The Herff Ranch remained close to the hearts of Juanita and her twin sister, Carolyn Herff Kennon. Juanita and Carolyn both built their dream homes there, in which to grow old. Carolyn died in 2023 but her memory lives on.

Juanita’s love of nature helped inspire her daughter, Carolyn Chipman Evans, to establish the Cibolo Center for Conservation, which is on part of the original Herff Ranch.

Juanita became an accomplished and prolific artist and showed her art in the Ukraine, but most enjoys giving her paintings away. She also became a historian and writer and published an extensive history of the Herff women in her two books, “The Passing of Gifts” and “Ilsa and Ida.”

She is enjoying her days in nature, with many visits by her family and friends and cared for by her dear house manager, Angie Salinas.
