Boerne ISD ready, waiting for aquatics center completion

When Boerne ISD “receives the keys” to the Boerne Aquatics Learning Center doors, its staff will waste no time getting acclimated to the facility.

Even though another “ scheduled completion date” of May 28 has come and gone, the district is doing its part to prepare once the contractor is finished. But there still will not be any swimming activity any time soon, according to Dr. Kristin Craft, Boerne superintendent.

At a May 5 meeting with management from Tegrity Contractors, the firm hired in summer 2023 to build the $8.7 million facility, Craft said familiarity with, and management of, the facility must come first.

“There’s a significant amount of training that needs to happen,” Craft said. “(Athletic Director Stan) Leech, his staff, operations, maintenance — they need to go through training all summer long. And we need to hire the person who is going to be responsible for this beautiful site.” Opening of the long-awaited $8.7 million Aquatics Learning Center — approved by Boerne voters in the 2022 bond election — has gone almost 300 days past the original August 2024 completion date.

The pool, 25 meters long, can accommodate nine or 11 competition lanes and features two 1-meter diving boards.

School officials said they will still come in under budget on the $8.7 million price tag. No new completion date has been established.
