CELEBRATING THE ARTS
Our June “Artist of the Month” for the Boerne Art League, Lleanna Brinsmade’s latest work, “Anthony Garcie: Portrait of an Extraordinary Texas Musician” is on display at Jefferson Bank in Boerne for the entire month of June, courtesy of Boerne Art League and available to purchase.
The piece was inspired by a memorable local private home concert and described as “an afternoon you won’t forget,” featuring Garcia, a gifted songwriter and virtuoso on guitar and keyboard.
Hill Country Council for the Arts invites you to Paint a Texas Hill Country Sunset with Pauly Tamez, Saturday, June 21, from 10 a.m. to noon at The Classroom at The AgriCultural Museum and Arts Center, 102 City Park Road in Boerne. Register today at www. hccarts.org.
Join Pauly as he guides you to create your own unique perspective on the magic of a sunset. Tamez speaks fondly of his mentor, Bill Zaner (February 1930-November 2015). Zaner discovered as his landscape subjects the deserts, rolling meadows, high plains and mountains of Hill Country and never tired of painting Texas landscapes for 40-plus years after moving to Texas. Several of his works can be viewed at Texas Treasures Fine Art Gallery. In his gallery biography, Zaner remarked of Texas, “I never had to go anywhere else to find such a wealth of beauty to paint.”
Many artists have painted sunsets but among the most famous is Claude Monet. Most notable are those executed in his impressionist style. Not only was Monet able to capture the atmospheric effects of sunsets, but also the fleeting light. His sunset paintings are best known for his use of striking colors and use of short, visible brushstrokes that created a sense of movement and light. The writer’s favorite Monet sunset would be “San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk,” 1908-1912. The Venetian island is portrayed in strokes of orange, pink and purple reflecting off calm waters, while his delicate brushworks suggest the passage of time.
Sunset paintings of historic significance to consider are:
• Martin Johnson Heade’s “Sunset Rhode Island.” Heade was a member of the distinguished Hudson River School.
• “Ship at Sea, Sunset” by Edward Moran, an American marine painter.
• Frederic Edwin Church’s “Twilight in the Wilderness,” is yet another prominent member of the Hudson River School.
• “Sunset in the Rockies,” by Albert Bierstadt, a renowned American landscape painter, was most famous for his depictions of the American West.
