Joyce loved her students and the challenges of teaching. She was the last teacher at Pleasant Valley School when it closed in 1955. She then taught in the public schools in Lytle and Poteet.

After her years of dedicated teaching, Joyce returned to the family farm and cared for her father, Charlie. Upon his death, she inherited some acreage and the family homestead. Joyce loved the farm with the large garden and a few head of cattle.

Due to health issues, Joyce moved to Cibolo Creek Health and Rehabilitation Center in Boerne where she lived the past 14 years.

Joyce was an avid reader, a big Spurs fan and was a member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed the many activities at the nursing home, playing bingo, and visiting her many friends.
