Kymberly Jo Fox, 65, of Boerne, Texas, passed away at home on July 19, 2025, after a brief and sudden battle with cancer.
Kym was born in Lafayette, Indiana, on Nov. 27, 1959, to Steve and Joy Fox. She graduated from Layton High School in Utah in 1977 and earned her bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University, where she attended the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism. Later, she earned a master’s degree in communication from University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. Kym spent more than 20 years in daily journalism, including nearly two decades at the San Antonio Express-News, where she covered courts and later served as deputy metro editor.
In 2002, she joined the faculty at Texas State University, where she became a beloved professor and mentor to hundreds of students. She was twice honored with the Presidential Award for Excellence. A leader in the Society of Professional Journalists, Kym was known nationally for her contributions to journalism education.
She married Gary Boyer in 1991 and raised their children, Robbie and Emily, in Boerne. She served her community through church leadership, the Boerne Education Foundation and the Walk to Emmaus. In May of 2025, she married Michael Tinnon of San Antonio.
Kym is survived by her husband Michael; her children Robbie (wife Claire) and Emily; granddaughter Caroline; her father and stepmother (Steve and Marge Fox), siblings (Steve Fox and Angie Lloyd), their spouses, numerous nieces and nephews, and extended family. She was preceded in death by her mother (Joy Freeman Fox) and two brothers (Kent Fox and Thomas Hester). A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16 at First United Methodist Church, 205 James St. in Boerne.
