Hundreds of people flocked to Comfort Community Park Saturday, where members of the Das Festival of Kendall organization hosted a free community feed — filling plates to the brim with brisket, potato salad, sausage and more for attendees not just from Comfort, but from Center Point Kerrville and Boerne as well.
“Our (Das Festival of Kendall) mission is to celebrate the heritage of Kendall County,” founding member Collins Martin said. “We do that with a festival and a golf tournament. But as you know, after the festival, the floods came. Some folks came to us and said they had a bunch of hogs and wanted to do something for the community.” The idea snowballed and grew from there. Other donors stepped forward, eventually offering more than 250 pounds of ground meat, eight hogs and over 500 links of sausage.
“So, we got to thinking that we might do a plate sale, but there’s been so much money raised already,” Martin said. “We thought, ‘Let’s just have a big event and feed everyone for free.’” Hundreds of people came out for the event, where they were fed and entertained with live music.
“We wanted to bring fellowship,” Martin said, “maybe have a moment where people aren’t worried about what has been going on. They can relax and have a day off.”
But Das Festival of Kendall County isn’t just about hosting a free community event. Every year, Das Festival of Kendall selects four charities to support with proceeds from its now-annual Father’s Day weekend festival in downtown Boerne. “This year, we picked Comfort Table and Food Pantry, Heartland Children’s Home, Boerne Blaze Special Olympics and the VFW Post,” Martin said.
“Through our festival and golf tournament, we raised money to donate to them. And with this event today, Comfort Table and Food Pantry is able to utilize these leftovers for their weekly communal suppers on Wednesdays.”
Still, the abundance of food had Martin encouraging attendees to take to-go plates.
“We have about 2,000 servings,” Martin said. “ There is plenty for everyone.”
