Queen’s coronation opens

The Kendall County Fair celebrates its 119th anniversary this year, and organizers are making sure the calendar of events is packed to the brim – from Aug. 28 opening and Queen’s Court coronation, to Sunday’s much-anticipated bull riding finale.

From carnivals and a parade to food vendors and Wild West shoot-out, KCFA President Gayle Shussler promises fun for the entire family.

For those wanting to watch the crowning of the new Kendall County Fair queen, the day to come to the fairgrounds — at 1307 River Road, just past Boerne City Park — is Thursday.

For more than 30 years, the Queen’s Court Scholarships have been awarded to young ladies who have represented the Kendall County Fair Association and the communities they come from.

Scholarships are awarded once they graduate from high school and have enrolled in the college or trade school of their own choosing. Be sure to be on the lookout for the KCFA pageant on Thursday night.

If you have a taste for live country music, KCFA has slotted performers throughout the weekend, starting with Luke Prater on Friday.

Prater’s been “playing the guitar since he was in diapers,” he jests, and has released his own singles. Saturday, Coffey Anderson takes the stage. Anderson was a contestant on season two of American Idol, making it to the Hollywood round.

After Anderson is Glen Templeton on Sunday, a country music artist who has reached no. 1 on music charts for some of his singles, including “Ball Cap.”

A rodeo would not be a rodeo without a stock show. The livestock show will be held on Saturday and Sunday, featuring steers, heifers, lambs and goats.

Bull riding for the very bravest will be on Sunday — come early to get a good seat and make sure to wish the contestant’s good luck.

For some more family fun, bring everyone downtown on Saturday morning for the annual parade, which kicks off at 10 a.m. The route will start on North Main at Frederick Road and proceed South onto Main Street toward the Kendall County Fairgrounds. The newly crowned fair queen will be in attendance with her newly appointed court. Make sure to wave hello!

“We want to make sure everyone can come out and have a good time,” Shussler said.
