Boerne Parks and Recreation Department on Friday closed own Northside Community Park as construction of a new 40-acre, $16.5 million park gets underway.

The project, approved by Boerne voters in the 2022 bond program, will feature an all-abilities playscape, multi-use sports fields with lights, a dog park, pickleball courts, a splashpad, a food truck court, and other amenities.

“This park represents our community’s commitment to creating spaces where everyone — families, athletes and neighbors of all ages — can come together,” Mayor Frank Ritchie said. “It’s an investment in our quality of life today and for generations to come.”

A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. Sept. 3 at 524 Adler Road.

Before that can happen though, the entire area — including the skate park, restrooms and fields — closed on Friday, as crews begin preparing the site for construction.

“With City Council authorization in August to proceed with Phase One, it is very exciting to be so close to kicking off construction,” said Lissette Jimenez, city Parks and Rec director.

The city estimates the park to be done within a 12-to-18-month time frame.

The groundbreaking comes on the heels of other recent investments in the park system. Earlier in 2025, at Boerne City Park the city created dedicated pickleball courts. With funding from the Boerne Parks Association, the play area is now ADA-accessible.

In 2024, the community celebrated a nearly $2.5 million overhaul and environmental rehabilitation at River Road Park.

The first phase of Northside Park construction will focus heavily on site preparations, including extensive grading and earthwork to shape the land for park features.

Nearly three years of planning has led to this milestone, according to city officials, marking the start of a signature project that will expand recreation opportunities for everyone in Boerne.

The revamped Northside Community Park will include its share of pickleball courts.
