Arts: Band concerts, dog drawings, steinholding

“So good to live in a world where there are Octobers.” — Anne of Green Gables

Time to pack your suitcase and take a journey with the Boerne Concert Band, directed by Larry Schmidt, as the community is invited to join the BCB for an afternoon of “Music Around the World.”

On Sunday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m., bring your families and friends to the Boerne High School auditorium, 1 Greyhound Lane, to enjoy musical selections such as Fandango, Latin Celebration, Rus- sian Sailor’s Dance, Hoch Heidecksburg, Armenian Dances, River Trail Expedition, Texas Star, and more.

• Today’s lagniappe (LAN yap), the Cajun-French word for “a little extra”-- One of the benefits to working in the arts is the occasional blending of audiences who feed their souls by creating-enjoying visual arts, music, books and theater.

Through our communications partner at the Boerne Concert Band, this writer was introduced to a lovely, selftaught senior who now lives in Boerne. Ursula Hurst has had quite the journey: Zimbabwe, England, Boerne.

She finds joy in painting, having taught herself using tutorials in watercolor, oil and, currently, pastel pencils. In her latest favorite medium, she is creating pet portraits for friends, but mostly for her own enjoyment.

When not drawing dogs, she can be found singing with and playing her ukulele with the Boerne Ukuladies. This group practices together at St. Helena Church. As Ursula explains, chuckling, “We regularly serve the community by playing for ‘seniors’ at assisted living facilities.”

Ursula occasionally agrees to paint pet commissions; she can be reached at: baobab1639@ gmail.com.
