BOERNE — The Texas Department of Transportation is overseeing a project designed to help alleviate a portion of traffic trouble at the city’s Herff Road and Main Street intersection.
A developer will soon begin construction of a new right-turn lane at the southeast corner of Main Street and Herff.
This intersection improvement is a requirement of the city’s Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) regulations, which ensure new development projects do not create added congestion and that nearby intersections continue to operate at a safe level of service for all roadway users.
“Turn lanes play an important role in separating turning traffic from through traffic, reducing delays, and improving overall safety,” Jeff Carroll, Boerne’s engineering and mobility director, said.
“This project is being funded and constructed by the developer as part of their responsibility to offset the traffic impacts of their project,” Carroll said.
This location was identified for mitigation in the Boerne Town Center’s TIA report. The new turn lane will allow drivers to turn right from northbound Main Street onto eastbound Herff Road. Because Main Street (Business Highway 87) is maintained by the state, TxDOT will oversee the project, which is estimated to take four months to complete.
