The Comfort High football team is coming off its first loss of the season and will look to bounce back in its final non-district contest of the year.
Comfort closes out non-district at Bandera on Friday and faces a 5-0 Bulldogs squad. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Bandera and Bobcats coach Jay Rieken said the Bulldogs are having a great season.
“They are 5-0 and having success is always a good thing,” he said. “Their quarterback has been making plays and making really good decisions. They also run the ball really well.”
The Bulldogs have defeated Poteet (52-0), Ingram (21-17), Lytle (3125), Cole (56-0) and are coming off a 26-25 victory over Hondo last Friday.
Comfort (4-1) suffered its first loss of the season last week at the hands of Llano, 40-0.
The Bobcats are a little beat up and only suited up 23 players last week, but the good news is that after the Bandera game, the Bobcats will be off until they open district play Oct. 17 on the road against Rogers, so they’ll have a little time to heal up.
Rieken said he’d like to have a solid game under their belt heading into their bye week.
“We need to execute offensively and continue to get better,” he said. “We need to build on the success we’ve had.”
Comfort had a lot of success in its first four games this year and were averaging 43.5 points per game until they were shut down last week by a stingy Yellowjackets defense.
For what it’s worth, both Comfort and Bandera have defeated Ingram this year. The Bulldogs beat the Warriors 21-17 and Comfort picked up a 47-35 win over the Warriors.
Comfort and Bandera are only about 30 minutes apart and the teams have played each other over the years in non-district if the schedule allows, but Rieken said they don’t really consider the Bulldogs a rival.
“They’re not really a rival,” he said. “The schools are not close enough to know much about each other.”
