Holy Cross had their football and volleyball programs placed on probation and even had some coaches suspended after they received sanctions and penalties from the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) for rules violations.
Football
The Holy Cross football team was caught using an electronic earpiece in their game with Geneva School of Boerne on Oct 3.
No electronic communication is allowed between players and coaches during a game, according to TAPPS rules.
Ameeting was held Monday, and TAPPS announced the penalties Wednesday afternoon on its website.
Holy Cross Head Coach Mike Harrison, Athletic Director Angel Cedillo and Assistant Football Coach Roy Salas all received public reprimands, according to TAPPS.
The Knights football program has been placed on probation through June 30, 2027, while Harrison and Salas will be suspended for three regular-season games.
Holy Cross must also forfeit all games where unapproved equipment was present and used, the statement read, which means they are 1-6 after winning last week’s game.
In a copy of a letter sent to Holy Cross parents obtained by the Boerne Star, Harrison claimed ignorance of the rule forbidding electronic communications.
“The school fully cooperated with the TAPPS review, which found that Head Football Coach Mike Harrison was under a mistaken belief that the device was permitted,” part of the statement read.
Volleyball
The Holy Cross volleyball program was found to be in violation of coaching restrictions, according to TAPPS. Basically, their coaches were coaching players beyond the permissible period, or out of season through a club volleyball program.
Cedillo, along with Coaches Melissa Hinojosa and Daniel Hinojosa, received public reprimands, the statement reads.
Both Hinojosa’s are suspended from coaching and are “not eligible for reinstatement until they appear before the TAPPS Executive Board. A request for reinstatement would not be considered before June of 2027,” according to the TAPPS statement.
Also, the Holy Cross volleyball program along with Cedillo and both Hinojosa coaches are on probation through June 30, 2027.
What does it mean for Geneva?
Geneva played Holy Cross twice in volleyball and lost both times, but the recent TAPPS ruling won’t change any of that.
The Knights will have new volleyball coaches going forward and are still eligible for playoffs and won’t have to forfeit any wins.
In football, Holy Cross was 4-2 when they were being investigated. The four wins have been turned to losses, including two district and two non-district games by the score of 2-0, so they are 1-6 after winning a district game last Friday.
That makes the Knights 1-2 in district. They have a non-district game and two district games left on the schedule. However, they are still eligible to make the playoffs.
Geneva lost to Holy Cross on Oct. 3, but that has now turned into a win for the Eagles. Geneva is 2-1 in district and 5-2 overall after the shakeup.
In the release sent to parents by Holy Cross, it says the Knights have fully cooperated with TAPPS on the investigation into its volleyball and football programs.
“Holy Cross of San Antonio is dedicated to upholding the principles of sportsmanship and the rules of the association. We are committed to ensuring full compliance with all TAPPS regulations moving forward,” the end of the statement concludes.
