Whenever the two Boerne ISD schools meet in any sport, it seems to bring out the best in both and that certainly was the case Tuesday when Boerne High hosted Boerne Champion at Greyhound Gym in a 26-5A volleyball match.

Both teams gave it everything they had and left it all on the court before the Lady Chargers prevailed, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 21-25, 22-20.

Tuesday’s match didn’t affect either team in the district standings, but they played like a state title was on the line.

Champion improved to 10-3 in district (25-5 overall) and has already clinched a playoff spot, while Boerne slips to 3-11 in the standings (19-15 overall) and won’t advance past the regular season. The two BISD schools split their two district games after BHS won their firstround meeting. Charger senior Taylor Fenton said she knew the Lady Greyhounds were going to give them their best shot.

“They always come out and show out, even last match they played the best they’ve ever played so I didn’t expect anything else,” she said. “It wasn’t going to be an easy one because they have good players.”

BHS took the first game, but the Chargers claimed the next two for the 2-1 match lead. Champion was up in the fourth set 9-5, but the Lady Greyhounds fought back with a 20-12 spurt to even things up at 2-2 and sent it to a fifth set.

Boerne High coach Staci Lawrence said she admired the fight her team showed in not giving it up and forcing a Game 5.

“We played super gritty today, they wanted it, we fought together and fought for every single point,” she said. “I think this was the best match that we’ve had in terms of fighting, especially in that fifth set, being able to go to 22-20 and fighting point for point. I’m curious how many lead changes there were because there seemed to be a lot.”

The coach is right about that because Game 5 contained 18 ties starting at 1-1. If there were that many ties, then the next point broke the tie, so there ended up being 37 ties or lead changes combined in that fifth set.

Lawrence said it’s not surprising that both teams battled so hard.

“They know each other and there is this friendship- level rivalry with each other,” she said.

The final tie came in the fifth set came at 20-20 before the Chargers tallied the final two points to close it out.

Fenton said the match was stressful and fun at the same time because of the atmosphere but added that it proved to them they could win in a raucous gym.

“We have that grit, and we know we have that grit and can get things done,” she said.

Champion hosted Pieper Friday and still has New Braunfels and Wagner left on the schedule before starting the playoffs against either Liberty Hill or Cedar Park.

The Lady Greyhounds visited Alamo Heights Friday and close out their season at home against Pieper on Friday. They are off on Tuesday.

For the Chargers, Cassidy Breuer led the team in two categories after she finished with 21 kills and 3 aces, while Fenton added 15 kills and 4 blocks.

Finley Weikle tallied 9 kills and 12 digs, Hannah Perez dropped in 2 aces and had 9 digs, Brielle Boothe recorded a team-high 19 digs, Breuer came up with 15 digs and Weikle had 12 digs, while Brady Cooksey chipped in with 47 assists and 16 digs.

For Boerne High, Kynsie Jones finished with 12 kills and 8 digs, Paige Stegall added 11 kills, 3 blocks and 3 aces, while Ava Seamans registered 10 kills and 4 blocks.

Brook Summers and Mikinley Schmidt both came up with 3 blocks, Haley Wheeler led the team in digs with 21, Lauren Magnus added 12 digs, while Cameron Keller paced the Hounds in assists and Magnus tallied 21 assists.
