COMFORT — Three people including two children died Monday when a tractor-trailer rig collided with a pickup on Interstate 10 West outside the city.
Two other occupants had to be hospitalized for their injuries following the accident near mile marker 524.
Giselle Cristobal, a 23-year-old passenger, and two male children were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The driver, a 31-year-old female, was rushed to a San Antonio medical center for treatment. A 2-year-old girl was airlifted to an Alamo City hospital as well.
According to DPS reports, a silver 2013 GMC Sierra pickup was stopped on the right lane of the highway for an unknown reason when a semi tractor-trailer collided with the truck at 3:19 p.m. Monday.
The rig’s driver was uninjured. Both lanes of westbound I-10 were closed and traffic rerouted through Comfort so police could investigate the incident.
The roadway reopened about 8:30 p.m.
The identities of the two male children, the driver and the 2-year-old girl were not available at press time.
