Comfort boys rock Stockdale, also take second at Randolph tourney

The Comfort High boys basketball team hosted Stockdale Tuesday as they continued non-district action. Before that, the Bobcats were entered in the Randolph tourney where they finished second.

Comfort has been playing well of late and defeated the Brahmas, 68-39. It’s their fourth win in a row and their seventh victory in their last eight games.

The Bobcats (15-7 overall) hosted Canyon Lake Friday, and open district play at Ingram on Jan. 16.

In Tuesday’s contest, Comfort was up 16-9 and then took a 33-19 lead into halftime after winning the second quarter, 17-10.

The Bobcats heated up in the third and took the quarter, 21-11, and then closed it out in the final stanza by outscoring the Brahmas, 14-9.

Several Bobcats shot the ball well after three finished in double figures. Jovani Zapata tallied 21 points on 8 of 10 shooting, Jared Valadez added 20 points and Omar Rivera netted 13 as the trio accounted for 54 of their 68 points.

Alex Padilla chipped in with 8 points and 10 rebounds, Mario Portugal scored 3, Jackson Dear chipped in with 2 and Dmitry Steward made a free throw.

Dear dished out 6 assists, Rivera came up with 6 steals and Padilla had a block.

Randolph Tournament

Comfort went 3-1 at the Randolph tourney and defeated the Ro-Hawks, 64-62, edged Lytle, 79-75, and then beat Lutheran, 82-51.

Their only loss came to Kennedy, 59-39, to end up in second place.

Jared Valadez, Omar Rivera and Jovani Zapata were named to the all-tournament team.

Also, before playing Stockdale on Tuesday, the Bobcats hosted Randolph in another non-district game and beat the Ro-Hawks by a wider margin than in the tourney, 55-49.
