County extends burn ban for 90 days

With drought conditions worsening, the Kendall County Commissioners Court voted Monday to extend its existing burn ban for another 90 days.

The agreement signed by the commissioners prohibits all outdoor burning other than for recreational or ceremonial purposes.

The county’s Keetch-Byram Drought Index figure was 655 Monday, well above the 600-plateau considered dangerous for fire situations. Above 600, according to the index, signifies severe drought and extreme fire behavior.

The burn ban will now extend through midnight on April 13 unless extended again or significant rains fall in the county.

Burning is allowable in areas of the county where trash pickup is not available, but only for a single household — and is also prohibited when wind speed exceeds 15 mph.

Anyone caught violating the burn ban could be punished with a fine of up to $500, according to the signed order.
